This very special coffee comes from small Arabica producers living in the Vietnamese Central Highlands known as the K’No people. The K’No people, characterized by the local language, are one of the many ethnic minorities in Vietnam.
However, the country’s story of rapid coffee growth left little room for high-quality coffee. Robusta accounts for about 95-97% of the country’s production, and although Arabica’s production has been increasing in recent years, it still represents only a very small part of Vietnam’s total coffee production. The main variety of Arabica grown in this region is Catimor, which was originally chosen for its good adaptation to the local climate as well as for its resistance to coffee rust and coffee berry diseases. Recently, however, the Vietnamese government has begun to recommend locally selected alternatives to Catimore, unknown to the global market. This could mean exciting new varieties for the premium coffee market in the future.
